Collecting Practices
In this lecture, art historian and curator Clare Davies speaks about the collecting practices in the UK and the USA in regards to Middle Eastern and North African art. In his response, architect and editor Mohamed Elshahed will focus on the potential impact of current collecting practices in the West on the representation of Egypt abroad.

Clare Davies serves as Assistant Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, Middle East, North Africa and Turkey at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Clare Davies has worked as a writer, researcher and curator in the Middle East since 2006 and completed a doctoral dissertation on Modern Egyptian art at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU in 2014. She is the inaugural Irmgard Coninx Prize for Transregional Studies (2014/2015)
Mohamed Elshahed, PhD, is the Curator of the Modern Egypt Project at the British Museum, London. He is a historian of modern architecture in Egypt, and founder of Cairobserver.com
This talk is part of Cairo Museum of Contemporary Art (CAMOCA). It is a curatorial project that reflects on the history of contemporary art in Cairo and adopts specific artistic strategies inspired by projects and exhibitions of artists and curators that have worked in the region at least once before, challenging exhibition formats, categories and protocols of museums and other stable art spaces.
