Hala Elkoussy was born in Cairo in 1974. She studied at the AUC The American University in Cairo before completing an MA in Image and communication at Goldsmiths, University of London. She lectured on photography in 2002-2003. In 2004, she co-founded the CIC - Contemporary Image Collective, an artist-run initiative dedicated to the visual image, based in Cairo. In 2006, she completed a two year residency at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 2010, Elkoussy was a recipient of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize as well as a development grant from the Hubert Bals Fund, International Film Festival Rotterdam for her feature film treatment entitled “Cactus Flower”.

In 2011 and 2012, Elkoussy has produced and directed two music videos screened on Egyptian Television. In 2013, she published her first book, a photographic diary of life in the City in the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution. In 2014, she started up Foto Masr فوتومصر, a photographic archive and published a book on wedding photographs in Egypt. Elkoussy is currently working on her first feature film entitled Cactus Flower which recently has been chosen for the Fabriques Cinemas du Monde, Cannes Film Festival.
