7.00pm: Moviemonday
“We were calling for manpower and people came.” Max Frisch
They arrived 40 years ago and were called “Gastarbeiter”:
People with hope, fears and sometimes bleeding hearts, because their families left behind. Farewell to their home often meant farewell forever.
GURBET – IN A FOREIGN LAND tells the story of nine migrant workers who moved to Austria in the 60s and since then, feel stuck in the middle of two worlds: between their new and old lives, between staying and leaving.
For the first time, the economic-political reasons for the immigration of the first wave of Turkish Gastarbeiter and the social consequences are reviewed critically in a documentary film.
The austrianculturalforum/cairo cordially invites you to this fascinating and touching movie with a foregoing introduction by director Kenan Kilic.
