On migration and dreams.

Through migration, some dreams may be realized. But migration can also limit the scope of dreams, for it becomes difficult to pursue those dreams that cannot be realized by means of migration.

In a period where all classes of society are expressing a strong desire to leave their homeland, we will reflect upon the dreams that drive people to emigrate, and others that begin to control them as a result. For every journey is a journey with no return, and no traveler will ever return to their past self.

Join us at the Townhouse library for a conversation, in Arabic, with the Finnish researcher and anthropologist Samuli Schielke, in which he will contemplate this dialectic drawing from his work with Egyptians who dreamt of migration or have already migrated; accompanied by the Egyptian poet Basem Abu Geweili, one of the migrants who shared with Schielke his reflections.

Townhouse Salon is a monthly series of friendly conversations served over coffee in the library. Each Salon is led by a moderator – a writer, an artist, an academic – who is invited to curate a topic and share relevant texts with the public, to be deliberated upon in our gatherings.
