Open call: "How To" technical workshop program
Deadline for Applications: Tuesday, November 5, 2013

From November 2013 through April 2014, Townhouse presents an intensive series of workshops on the technical aspects of producing art exhibitions and other cultural events. Geared towards aspiring technicians as well as artists and curators, participants will learn the specialised skills needed to provide technical support for different kinds of cultural venues, through both conceptual and hands-on methodologies.

The workshops will cover different areas of technical expertise, from the fundamentals of art handling to lighting and sound design, installing new media, exhibition design, exhibiting work in non-traditional venues, and project management skills such as time management and handling budgets. The program will also provide opportunities for the participants to get hands-on experience in cooperation with exhibition venues around Cairo.

The program will be taught by highly experienced local and international workshop leaders, who will provide one-on-one career mentoring as they discuss their own career paths, present sample job descriptions for art handling and preparatory work, and explain the kind of skills required to obtain such jobs.

In addition to practical workshops, the program will include a number of lectures covering production processes, design elements and organisational techniques, and participants will work on a variety of assignments pertaining to the topics introduced. Participants will be introduced to the ins and outs of working in tandem with artists, curators, gallerists and other cultural workers, and visit the diverse art spaces Cairo has to offer.

By the end of workshop program in April 2014, participants will have gained the professional skills required to produce various exhibitions and cultural events, and will be prepared either to take their newfound expertise back to their own spaces, or be better prepared to enter the career field in the areas of art handling, exhibition installation and exhibition design.

Project manager Saad Samir graduated from Cairo University in 2000, and has over a decade of experience as a technical manager both locally and abroad. Samir was the technical manager for major Cairo exhibitions including Meeting Points and Photo Cairo 4, and has also been the technical manager on wide range of exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and other events across Egypt, the Middle East and Europe.
This program was made possible thanks to the generous support of the British Council.
